Leonardo Pirondi (b. São Paulo, Brazil) is a filmmaker and artist. His films build and inhabit alternative worlds that move between reality and fiction; his filmmaking practice challenges traditional narrative structures that emerge from the fabulation of sociopolitical resonances within culture, history, technology, image-making, and orality. His films have shown at festivals such as TIFF, IFFR, NYFF, Viennale, Mar del Plata, FICUNAM, BFI London, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Guanajuato, and others. He holds a BFA and MFA degrees in film from CalArts and is a Sundance Institute Fellow. He has been supported by Portugal's national fund, the Allan Sekula Doc. Fund, and Tim Disney Prize for Excellence in Storytelling Arts.

A post-apocalyptic future in the Brazilian Sertão. Canyon settlement dwellers witnessed rainfall for the first time in decades. Mystics assign Zul, 20s, a task to find the prophet who will transform the land into a sea. In his quest, Zul journeys through harsh landscapes, encountering strange communities. He arrives at Barravento, where he is captured. Zul mentions the rain. Chaos erupts, a shootout, and a dead landowner—protests will continue. Zul runs towards home, bloodied and tearful.
My film AMERIKA’ATINGA is a cinematic gesture of world-making, imagination production, and how it can become a form of political resistance. I am looking forward to starting the development journey of my film during my days at the Locarno Residency and exchanging ideas for cinematic subjectivities to be created.
